The March 23 Nationwide Rally for Religious Freedom was such a stunning success due in no small part to the tremendous outpouring of support from dozens of Catholic bishops—led by no less than Cardinal Timothy Dolan, the Archbishop of New York and the president of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops.

Cardinal Dolan himself issued a letter of support that was read at the Rally for Religious Freedom held on Wall Street, in the heart of his Archdiocese.

The Cardinal’s Letter begins:

Dear Friends,

It is a privilege to commend you for your participation in the Rally for Religious Liberty, for standing up for the fundamental rights of all people of faith.

Since January 20, when the final HHS Mandate was announced, two things have been abundantly clear: religious freedom is under attack, and we will not cease our struggle to protect it. Of course, this is not a “Catholic issue” alone. It is wonderful to see so many of our fellow Americans of all faiths stand together in this important moment.

In addition to Cardinal Dolan, 11 other bishops provided statements that were read at one or more of the 143 Rally locations across the country, and 25 bishops spoke in person at a Rally:

We in Ft. Lauderdal Fl had over 350 at our rally with excellent speakers. We also had beautiful Religious Freedom printed t-shirt (for only a $10.00 donation) and car magnets with Relegious Freedom Our Fist Amendment Right printed on in red white and blue. What ever we can do to spread the word.

The Madison WI rally was well attended. My car is wearing a new bumper sticker and I am wearing a new button, for Stop the Mandate. Our Bishop spoke powerfully as did the others. It was prayerful and peaceful. It felt good to be doing something about it.

As Co-Captain (along with Art C. of Tampa, across the Bay) of the St Petersburg Fl Rally, we counted 250 at 1PM. Katrina Garza of recent Mississippi encounters (FOX News) spoke and led us for an hour before she had to depart to a local High School and witness pro-life to the teen-agers. We had a host of balloons, U.S flags, St Mark flags [from St Mark Parish-Tampa], and many great professionally made and home made signs. Bishop Lynch was out of the country, but he left word with a diocesan administrator that he would be praying for a successful outcome to defend religious freedom. Our non-diocesan approved Rally was an effective, enlightening event that helped educate the public on the true issues of the HHS Mandate. We prayed and witnessed to 3PM ending in Divine Mercy Prayer at that time. With folks coming and going between Noon and 3PM, the total was probably 300.
